Thought I'd send out this short list as it sounds like Beth could use some support for Sully, who recently had extensive surgery. Beth, if you have questions about care or anything, I can post them right out. I can post replies to Beth quickly, too. It sounds like Sully's getting great care! Hang in there Beth. 1. Unfortunately it turned out to be a lot more than a left adrenal. He had both adrenals removed leaving just a tiny piece of the right, a lymph node removed, a mass taken off his pancreas and his spleen removed. We had originally decided to leave his spleen but the Dr. called me during surgery & said it was huge. I didn't want him to have surgery again in a few months. He came home Thurs. & was pretty out of it. Unfortunately he still looked pretty groggy this morning so we did give him 1/4 of a tablet of Pred. Today, Friday he had subQ fluids and may need them again on Sat. If he does not improve he will get pred every day & may start him on Fluronef? as early as Sunday. Our vet is now exploring other options including an injection that only has to be given every 6 weeks. My ferret Bear had the left adrenal out & was running around the house the next day so I'm a little anxious & worried about how flopped Sully is. His color & temperature is good but he's not interested in eating or drinking. He knows his Ferretvite tastes funny with the antibiotic crushed up in it. I'm glad to be home for the weekend to take care of him. It took Percy about this long to pull out of surgery. The whole day after surgery he did not want to eat so we force fed him turkey soup (baby food and water) and water, but could tell he was really sore as he kept grinding his teeth. He was also extremely lethargic and had a low temperature (96ish as I recall). We rushed back to the vet and got him an antibiotic and prednisone. I kept him (carefully monitored) on a well covered heating pad and he got lots of tlc. The second morning after surgery he was getting a bit more active and had his appetite back and by the third day he was beginning to trot around a bit. And boy was he a happy camper for a few months after that, as if he'd faced a terrific illness and had a new lease on life. I would think after all that surgery Sully would be really sore, which is why, it seemed, Percy didn't want to eat, as he was grinding his teeth. Take good care of yourself and cyberspace hugs to you both! Lynn PS. On a hunch I took my deepest sleepers temperature while he was snoozing (that did wake him up though!). It was 96 or 98; I've got it written somewhere. I've heard ferrets go into a semi-hibernating state during deep sleep, and I was surprized that Percy's temp was so low the day after surgery, while his color looked so good. Since he was sleeping a lot maybe this at least partially explains it! 3.---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Thu, 15 May 1997 23:54:02 -0500 (CDT) From: Amy Cada Subject: Zowie and Hobbes Biofile for: Zowie and Hobbes (Amy Cada) Zowie is 5.5 years old, a MF fuzzy rescued at 6 months old when she quit being cute. Last June, all four of my ferrets contracted some form of enteritis (definitely not ECE), still exhibited for days to weeks at a time in both Zowie and another non-adrenal ferret. Later that summer, she started exhibiting typical adrenal symptoms of hair loss, behavioral change, irritated skin, and vulval swelling. Because of her enteritis, we attempted hormone shots to reduce the vulva, but after a total of three shots with zero response, we finally went in for surgery last September. She had a bad right adrenal which was completely removed, along with a portion of her left plus biopsies of surrounding lymph nodes and intestines. The lymph nodes and adrenal glands all came back neoplastic. She had 3 months of hair growth and normal behavior, but has regressed since December. Because of her continuing un-resolved enteritis, age, and the fact that she has a really bad hypoglycemic episode every time her enteritis flares, we are maintaining her on 2-3 times a day of duck soup, pepto, rounds of Augmentin, carafate, and, of course, pred. Hobbes began exhibiting adrenal symptoms shortly after Zowie did, also just several weeks after the onset of their enteritis. His intestinal problems resolved in September, so he underwent surgery in October. A nasty right gland was completely removed; the left was only biopsied, along with surrounding lymph nodes. All came back hyperplastic. He has been symptom-free since November, his enteritis has not returned, and his hair has completely returned. He is 3 months older than Zowie; 5.75 years old, a male MF ferret. He takes no medications and eats only Iams Eukanuba. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Amy M.E. Although, we have one in the shelter that had an adrenal problem at 1 year of age. Both my adrenal ferrets were very itchy. Max, who definitely has an enlarged right adrenal, as noted during surgery to remove the left, is always scratching. I think the hot to the touch part *might* just be due to very thin hair and their 102 normal temperature coming through to your hand. A human with a 102 temp feels really hot and when we feel that temperature, it's a natural reaction to think it abnormal. I couldn't say about the vulva since I've never had a female ferret! By the way, Max is going to the vet tomorrow for the decision on when/if we go in for the right adrenal.
