I woke up to a sad message from Sterling. Looking quickly through past lists I found a little info on Lydia, that she had a left adrenal removed about two years ago, after which the right started causing problems, for which she was put on Lysodren. In a post April 25, 1997 Sterling wrote that she was experiencing a swollen vulva. Please send any ideas you have directly to him so he'll get them immediately, and cc: the list. I'll include my reply here. Thank you, Lynn Adrenal List #15, dated May 26, 1997 1. URGENT: my fading child 2. Adrenal List Manual 3. I cant get her to eat much of anything. I have been giving pedialyte to keep her hydrated and a little ensure and some puppy milk replacement but even getting that down her is a battle. The vet says it is the advancement of her adrenal disease and I am at a loss as to what to do for her. She doesnt seem to be uncomfortable but she is so lethargic and floppy. She has lowered body temperature about 97 degrees at our last visit and the vet says she is probably experiencing some bone marrow problems which are causing this. I have no idea what her life expectancy is in a state like this and I am looking for any advice I can get. Thanks sterling........ To Sterling, from Lynn Mc.: I'm so very sorry, Sterling, to hear about sweet Lydia's condition. When we've had ferrets this sick we've usually resorted to giving sub-q fluids the insure against hydration. Your vet, of course, can check if she is dehydrated. Has your vet considered a bacterial infection? Or done a blood test? I guess I'm (perhaps naively) looking for a definitive reason it's assumed this is adrenal-related. Is he/she concludingt she's suffering from aplastic anemia? Please keep us updated Sterling, and send more information about her condition, if you're up to it. I'll send anything out from you (or pertaining to Lydia) immediately. Take Care and please give Lydia a gentle hug from the group. I put everything in order by subject. Unfortunately in some cases I forgot to copy over the name of the person who posted. I apologize for this and will do better in future. The manual contains information up to and including Adrenal List # 13. I will try to update the information on a monthly basis. If you're interested in receiving the updates just let me know. Barb Gustafson (aka Boots) P.S. The attached is in Microsoft Word Version 6. NOTE from LMc: Hi Barbara! I think your idea for a subject manual is a great next step for the list. Thank you for doing this. Can others write you for updates as well? And/or write me and I'll forward to you? Also, can you send it to me as an e-mail, as I haven't been able to open it as an attachment yet (don't have MS 6.0 at home yet). Thanks Hugs to our fuzzies and you! It has been 2 and a half weeks since the vet took out his right adrenal gland, part of his liver and ligated his vena cava. He is eating all his normal kibble, a mix of Totally Ferret and Iams Kitten, (but still getting a little extra ferretvite) and drinking and eliminating normally. He is climbing and playing and getting into trouble again. I am looking forward to seeing him turn 6 and 7 and 8 now. We are also trying to keep him from catching Giardia, which our two girls have. So far so good. The girls are almost through with their meds and he has shown no signs yet. The vet who did Rikki, Dr. Hudson, has now done 5 vena cava ligations in the last 3 months. And as far as I have heard all are doing just fine. I *know* 3 are doing great because they are all in our ferret club. I don't know the other 2 individuals. So for Dr. Hudson, the survival rate seems pretty good. Maybe a low survival rate for other vets is a result of the surgery being put off until the ferret was to weak? I don't know. Good luck to others contemplating this surgery, Pam Taynor taynor@ix.netcom.com member of the Triangle Ferret Lovers Club, N ------------------------End of Ferret List #15-------------------------
