Bobo is hanging in there! Great news. I'll bet the dedicated doctor is the Tom McCabe who lurks on our list... Lucky Bobo (and Dave)! Ludwig's better, too. Percy was like a kit after his adrenal exploratory; with a new lease on life. I'd just look at him and he'd do a dooky wardance. Glad Zuni's coming home tomorrow, too, Karen! I'm a little confused about the "Adrenal Fund"... did I miss something - I looked back at list #27? (It's a nice idea.) So nice to hear from you, Dixie. Dixie was one of the original five or so when the adrenal group just started. I was writing to five or so people and kept wishing what I wrote to one could be read by another, so... Percy was a big kisser, too (did I write this already); very ardent - and it might only have been my salt?!!! ;) Anyone up for checking with vets regarding 1-deprenyl (anipryl)? I must send out for the articles tomorrow, which Troy Lynn referenced in List #27 or #28. I've written Cathy about Lupron but need to call the UW to see if she's in Australia and, if so, when she'll be back. I'll ask her about this drug, too. Well, the house is a wreck, but the list is going out, and what are priorities for, anyway?! Also, all seven got to go out for a romp in the sunny, but evening cool, backyard. Fuzzy hugs, Lynn Mc. P.S. Thanks for the success stories so far. I'll compile them in a file and check back periodically on the fuzzies (for good news). I hope there's more than four or five success stories, though! I'll give updates on the compiled info, too. LMc. Adrenal List #29 1. Adrenal Recovery 2. Reply: Adrenal List #28 3. Adrenal Success Stories 4. Another Ludwig Update 5. Reply: Adrenal List #28 6. I don't remember the exact things she's doing, and she just completed a re-location from the forbidden land of kalif. to the east. I don't know if her regular email is being received yet, (woozles@ecom.net), but I think i'd be ok if you got her thru Harrold & Diane Way's account (theways@worldnet.att.net). He said it was being used in dogs and wondered if I'd heard of it being used in ferrets. I think it's worth posting this to the FML Lynn or to a couple vets...I know my vet felt that this drug would be easier on a ferrets system with fewer side effects if any. > The other interesting thing that I learned is that they seem to think that > she has an excessive need for salt -- like an imbalance, and that is why > she is always licking! Sterling...my vet also suspected this with Tippie....though he mentioned that the test wasn't really required as if this is what she had the medication would show improvement and verify the problem. Unfortunately in Tippie's case the 6 week run of medication had no effect. Bobo....prayers are with you. Your vet sounds like someone who is not easily discouraged and who is determined to do all he can for you. Hats off to him...and a swift recovery to you. Sterling....I think you've done a wonderful thing offering to take this adrenal ferret. As you all know I currently have an 11+ year old at home here...and I'm very leery of introducing any new ferrets into the home. I certainly don't wish for Hobie to leave us anytime soon....but when he does cross over to the Rainbow Bridge I fully intend to open my home to any ferret needing love and care, adrenal or otherwise. An adrenal ferret can still live and enjoy years of dooking and dancing...they just need a little more attention and yes money than a healthy ferret. But somehow I'll always find a way to get them any help they need. Just a brief update on Tippie...I continue to feed her Timmy's recipe, the hair loss seems to have stabilized. She's still zooming around at warp speed and getting into trouble everytime I turn around. Other then the fact she has very little hair....she is a ferret in every sense of the word. I have two success stories: first case: Rascal, MF, female. She had surgery for adrenals about 4 years ago. Removed the left adrenal gland. Her hair grew back completely (although strangely! the hair that grew in is whiter than the rest, so it formed a "blanket" much like an appaloosa horse on her butt and around her tail). She has had no recurrance of adrenal problems since then. She is now over 7 years old and (fingers crossed) no problems at all! second case: Kyle, MF, male. He had bilateral surgery for adrenals last March. He entire coat was scraggly and thin. His coat has since filled in beautifully, with the exception of the last 3 inches of his tail. That is still afflicted with blackheads, but is slowly coming back. He is under no medication and seems to be fine. I hope this is the information needed for your records! Happy Ferreting! Ludwig's doctor called me this morning, his biopsy came back - no cancer!!!! I am so relieved!!! So now I just hope that they removed the diseased gland... do I look for the same symptoms all over again? How soon will i know if they removed the correct gland? I believe he is feeling much better, his personality is back, running, jumping, hording, weasel war dancing, kisses, eating, and drinking. I'm having a problem giving him his antibiotics, as soon as he hears me shaking the bottle he hides, he hates the taste of them. His grandparents brought him some toys and he plays as much as when I first adopted him. Zuni comes home tommorrow, any suggestions as what to watch for? As of now it appears that Ludwig is one of the lucky ones, I hope the rest of the furrkids fair as well as he in their surgeries. PS In reference to list #27, I would be willing to donate to an adrenal fund, please send an address and to whom the check should be made out. 5.---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: 22 Jul 1997 23:16:31 -0000 From: dervish@scrye.com Subject: Re: Adrenal List #28 Hi Adrenal moms and dads I was very sorry to here that we lost Percy. Nickodemus was most like Percy in case history than any I read about. We are still fighting the E-Coli infection in his prostrate. I try we don't get a blockage. In the event one happens I want to be ready with an appropriate tube. Our Ferret expert vet is 45 minutes away and I know time is of the esesence in these matters. 4.5 months ago he had his right adrenal removed and has been on amoxicilin since. Twice we have tried to take him off the anitbiotics but on both occasions the infection returns in a couple of days. His hair regrowth is not complete and it could be expanding the bald spot he has by his tail. We are back on the antibiotics today and we are in wait and see mode regarding another exploratory surgery. We may do an x-ray next vet visit (2 weeks). I miss you Percy though I never met you. :( p.s. "I try we don't..." should be " I pray we don't" -Dixie Carter I know I don't write much lately but I am listening and loving on my fuzz children. Nickodemus..."not the nasty medicine again!" Missy..."You big lasy, play with me!" 6.---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Tue, 22 Jul 1997 17:20:02 -0600 From: dave adams Subject: Re: Bobo update The latest on Bobo is good. He was catherized again last nite and the E collar was modified. The catheter stayed in last nite and has been in all day. Dr McAbe wants to leave it in 2-3 days with reservation about infection. He is being monitored for antibiotic sensitivety and was switch from amoxy to another. This am when i went to see him i took a couple small pieces of banana which he attempted to scarf immediately. I let him have small piece and used the rest to entice him to eat some special cat chow for urinary problems. This did not work. He is eating some treats but the stuff he should he has to be hand fed. He is currently getting a mix of water and Deliver 2.0 (thanks to Gary). Enough of this the real thing here is how did he get the crystals(stones) in the first place. Dr McAbes theory is that he had the adrenal tumor (left) which could have caused the prostate to become involved and possibly become slightly infected. The infection could have caused the ph of the urine in the bladder to become less acidic which allows these crystals of magnesium ammonium phosphate to form. Diet is the usual cause appearently-- low animal protien- but Bobo eats TF and Mazuri. The process of catherizing him seems as though it has some merrit as it appears that cahterizing a blocked male ferret is almost impossible with the 3.5 French red rubber catheter as discussed in Hillyer and Quesenberry. They mention this difficulty. If this theory is correct then the best thing to do in an adrenal male ferret is to make sure the diet is very high in animal protein and the idea of a urinary acidifier might be looked into. Since females have no prostate this scenario would not exist but other types of infections that could involve the bladder could cause problems. Well Bobo still has a long way to go and right now it all seems uphill with the hills a little smaller that the first ones. Thanks again to everyone for the thoughts and prayers Dave Adams +16fbs --------------------------End of Adrenal List #29------------------------
