There is a post here from Paula who is seeking some quick answers. I'm going sailing in the San Juans! So, please make sure to send answers directly to people as well as the list, as I'll be gone a couple days. Thank you thank you to those who wrote me about Petey, and for the beautiful postcard :) Your messages have helped very much. We had a nice ceremony for Petey tonight and laid him to rest with our other much-missed kids, right next to the remains of his hero of heros and best champion, Tarzee. So sweet a guy as Petey never there never was. Who would of thought that within one year I'd lose my two strapping young and seemingly so healthy boys?! Tarzan and Petey. Life is full of twists and bends.... luckily some very good. I'll post more later about Petey, and about Gadzee, who had a vena cava ligation and bi-adrenalectomy two weeks ago (and is doing great, thank goodness!). Yes, I'm off for some much needed R & R on a friends 45-foot sailboat - sigh. It was truly hard to leave our furry (and the un-furry one) family at this time, but it's now or never as boat and friend sails for Canadian waters soon (though I may hitch a float plane up there at the end of August). I'll be back Sunday, July 25, so will get a list out near that date. As usual, see below for posting in the daily FML, if you aren't already subscribed. ADRENAL/INSULINOMA WEBSITE: FAIML ARCHIVES/PHOTOS: Past FAIMLs are being archived, with a search feature, on Michael Janke's adrenal/insulinoma web site: . Michael is also kindly posting pictures of FAIML subscribers and the ferrets at this site in the FAIML Album. Check out his site for more info. PAM GREENE's FERRET FAQs: I suggest people read (and reread) Pamela Greene's Disease FAQ's on Insulin and Adrenal diseases, as they offer a good background. I forward them to all new subscribers, and will gladly send them upon request. I also send the "Disease Package", a file that tells how to get all six of Pamela Greene's FAQs on ferret diseases. Pam also has excellent FAQ's about general ferret care as well, and a link to these may be found on the FERRET CENTRAL web site: . THE FERRET MAILING LIST (FML): The FML has 3,000+ ferret-loving subscribers and the topic is simply ferrets, ferrets, and more ferrets. Moderated by Mr. Bill Gruber, it's a good source of ferret entertainment and information. Visit FERRET CENTRAL on the web (see paragraph above) for more info on the FML. To subscribe to the FML, send email to its moderator, Bill Gruber, at and ask to be added. You can also try subscribing automatically by sending email to with the command SUBSCRIBE FERRET in the body of the email. 1. Subject: Adrenal or bone marrow cancer From: "Paula M. Webb" Date: Wed, 21 Jul 1999 13:49:02 -0400 Hi, I am new to this list and am looking forward to learning and sharing information with all of you. I have 5 ferrets all about 4 months to 3 years old. My little, deaf, blaze, Sassy (6 month old MF ferret) became very pale a couple of days ago. After having a friend look at her we brought her to the vets. The vet immediately took blood. The indication leaned towards juv. lymphoma. She kept her overnight and started her on pred. The next morning when the other vet came in they decided to do an exploratory surgery. They removed her enlarged left adrenal, a lymph node that was in the wrong place and aspirated her spleen. Everything elso looked fine. The nodes were not enlarged and the right adrenal was fine. After the pathology report came back there was no cancer. The vet called me and told me that she felt there was a possibility that her severe anemia could be caused by the right adrenal but that she felt it is caused by bone marrow cancer. She told me that there is precious little that can be done in this case. I went to pick Sassy up and brought her home. She is on a/d and her regular diet. She has been eating and drinking normally and she is using her litter box frequently. Today she has "pinked" up a bit, but if her crit drops anymore she will die. The vet is going to do more blood work on her when we go back for stitch removal. Hopefully, her crit will have gone up by then. I don't know if anyone has ever dealt with this type of problem but right now I am desperate for any info I can get. Thanks Paula and the crew. Paula M. Subject: Tense Abdomens >From: "meagan quinn" >Date: Sat, 17 Jul 1999 10:14:39 EDT I would say an xray is definitely in order and possibly an ultrasound depending on what the xray shows. It could be just fat, but there could be other more serious causes as well. -Melissa 3. Subject: Watery Eyes From: "Vicki L. Henderson" Date: Thu, 22 Jul 1999 01:13:00 -0400 Ok, Buzz's eyes have been watery, for quite some time. A friend of mine also has a ferret diagnosed with Insulinoma that has been treated numerous times for eye infections before being diagnosed with Insulinoma. My vet said that watery eyes were a sign of a ferret being ill, could mean numerous diagnosis, and friends vet said that the watery eyes "could" be a sign of Insulinoma. Now my question here is, have others that have had ferrets diagnosed with insulinoma noticed watery eyes? Is this common? -- Vicki L. Henderson-a.k.a. Ferret Fanatic The Fearless FLO!
