Let me know if it's okay to put them in a list and, for those who say it is, I'll put them all in one list. By the way. Please post about insulinoma problems freely, as I've mentioned before. It is often coupled with adrenal problems and can complicate treatment, so would be helpful to address here. Also, please remember to write POST in your subject lines. No decision on Wally's course of treatment for his giant tumor. No one mentioned hearing of one his size (golf-ball to racketball-sized and elongated). Fuzzy hugs! Lynn Mc. In a quiet unemotional voice he says "I've got good news and I've got bad news." "O.K. Tell me" "Well... the bad news is.... that you were right again." "SIGH" "The good news is it was the left adrenal and fairly large. Boomer is doing fine." Now you know what I put up with from Larry. :-) He teases me mercilessly. We've done several adrenal surgeries that there were no vet noticeable symptoms and Larry didn't think he would find a problem. But each time there was. One thing I've noticed is that pinched look in the eye area. When I first saw Boomer on Sunday he didn't look adrenal but then as I looked more closely I could see the pinched look in his face. Also I've noticed hairloss on the bottom of their feet when they aren't showing hairloss anywhere else. Both are symptoms a vet may not notice. I'm concerned for Sabie. She's 7. So please do keep her in your thoughts and prayers. Hopefully surgery will go well and she'll be clothed again before winter. Don't want to be hairless during winter in Kansas. Hugs and healing wishes to all. tle 2.---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Wed, 13 Aug 1997 18:50:44 -0400 (EDT) From: Lisaferets@aol.com Subject: POST: Reply Rochelle; Faith/spots Rochelle I am very sorry to hear about your ferret -- I am sure that you are the best ferret mom for her! I had one that was very itchy and I used a cream that my vet prescribed called "silvadene" that was extremely effective in controlling the itch. I would just watch your little baby very carefully and treasure every day that she is around. Lynn -- belated congrats on your marriage!!! For any one interested, the black irregular spots on my advanced adrenal ferret, Faith, have all but disappeared. All that is left are the stubborn blackheads on her tail. Thats the good news. The bad news is that now her vulva is starting to swell very badly and our surgery date is going to have to get pushed up -- I really wanted to wait until she was stabilized and 3-4 weeks after her distemper boosters. Oh well -- its not the first time a ferret has changed the best laid plans of mine! I hope this post finds everyone happy and well..... Happy Ferreting! I just got back from a much needed vacation, took my babies up to the family cottage to relax with a few friends. Ludwig is doing wonderful!!! I almost feel guilty that he is doing so well, everyone else seems to be having a really hard time, I send my prayers and hugs to all the sick fuzzies. Lug has lots of hair growth on his belly, we even joke that hes going through puberty, lots of dark hair around his privates!!! HAHA The only concern i have is the dark spots that appeared where he was licking, I'm assuming they are bruised areas, going to call his vet in the morning. I met the most insensitive clod last weekend, he proceeded to tell me how ferrets make lousy pets, called them vicious walking tumors!!! And kept on going with the verbal insults, saying i was stupid to have paid $300 plus to save Lud's life, says they are expendable, and that i just should have flushed him and bought a new one. And to top off my story, he is in school to become a vet. tech.!! What do you make of this...???? I don't really expect you to respond to this I just had to get it off my chest before I exploded. Something else has been bothering me too, when children see me walking my furrkids, they want to touch and pet them, but I'm so afraid these days with the Kodo and Kelly incidents here in Michigan. Its a shame because i want eveyone to know how wonderful and affectionate ferrets are and that they make teriffic companions!! Well Lynn, I want to thank you again for providing such a informative source of ferret knowledge. Congratulations to you and Janos on your marriage!!! Take care, Karen (hugs and kisses from Lud and Zuni to all the furrkids and their parents) Karen zuni2000@hotmail.com http://www.hotmail.com 4.---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Fri, 15 Aug 1997 11:55:54 -0400 (EDT) From: ROCHELLE@art.fss.buffalo.edu Subject: POST: Insulinoma Recipe Ingredient Needed This isn't really an adrenal question, but... I know a lot of you use the insulinoma soup recipe that Mary van Dahm came up with (am I right on this)> It calls for chelated chromium -- but I can't seem to find that (and the pharmacies can't even find it on their computers). All I've seen here is chromium picolate. Have any of you tried substituting? And if not, could someone tell me how much elemental chromium is in the stuff you use (so I can figure out the right amount to substitute)? -rochelle newman 5.---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Sat, 16 Aug 1997 10:47:22 -0600 (CST) From: Amy Cada Subject: POST: putting in good bacteria/killing off bad I recently found a review article on helicobacter which has a large section on ferrets since---drum roll please---100% of ferrets over 8-9 weeks have helicobacter mustalae in their stomaches, and 80-90% of ferrets over 2-3 years old have "moderate to severe ulceration" on endoscopy, whether or not symptoms are present. Based on this finding, and our chronic battle with a round of diarrhea, sporadic vomiting, etc, especially in my post-adrenal surgery boy, we went for the cure-- 3 times a day of pepto, flagyl, and amoxicillin for 30 days or more. You cannot miss a dose, and you cannot stop early, no matter what. I did the 30 day trial and have been AMAZED at the results! I've had ferrets for over a decade, and I didn't know that they could produce so LITTLE feces :) . I swear the volume is down by half. Their coats have improved significantly. Their appetites are such that they are both eating Iams Eukanuba and Linatone--no more duck soup! Therefore their teeth are cleaner. After the month of antibiotics, the vet suggested a half-dose (0.5 cc) of Bene-Bac pet gel. You can get it at most big pet stores in the puppy and kitten milk replacer section. It has acidophilus in it, as well as a few other beneficial bacteria. It has some sugar in it, so most ferrets eat it willingly. I have decided that any and all new ferrets that come to my household permanently will receive the month of treatment. Amoxicillin isn't a strong antibiotic, and at the dose it is given at, will not cause bacterial resistance.
