Urgent 2. Insulinoma Surgery Question 3. second adrenal surgery The FERRET ADRENAL/INSULINOMA MAILING LIST (FAIML) is a group that's come together to share support and information about adrenal and insulinoma diseases. FAIML comes out in digest format three to six times per week, depending on the number of posts sent, and their surgency. FAIML information is the opinion, only, of subscribers, mostly ferret caretakers. It is not medical advice, comes with no guarantee of accuracy, and is not meant to replace the examination and medical oversight of a qualified veterinarian. If your ferret is sick or exhibiting signs of illness take your fur kid to the most ferret- experienced vet you can find! A ferret- experienced vet is one of the most important services you can provide to your ferret. TO POST: Write POST at the end of your subject heading (the more specific you can be in your subject heading, the better) and send to . URGENT POSTS: If you feel the message is urgent please mark it POST URGENT and I'll send it out to subscribers as soon as I can, then include the message in the next list. CALIFORNIA RESIDENTS: Please write POST ANONYMOUS after your subject heading if you don't want your address or last name published. SUBSCRIBE/UNSUBSCRIBE: Just use the one address for posts, subscription questions, requests, cancellations, comments, etc. The list is run by hand so just send me an email. ADRENAL/INSULINOMA WEBSITE: FAIML ARCHIVES/PHOTOS: Past FAIMLs are being archived, with a search feature, on Michael Janke's adrenal/insulinoma web site: . Michael is also kindly posting pictures of FAIML subscribers and the ferrets at this site in the FAIML Album. Check out his site for more info. PAM GREENE's FERRET FAQs: I suggest people read (and reread) Pamela Greene's Disease FAQ's on Insulin and Adrenal diseases, as they offer a good background. I forward them to all new subscribers, and will gladly send them upon request. I also send the "Disease Package", a file that tells how to get all six of Pamela Greene's FAQs on ferret diseases. Pam also has excellent FAQ's about general ferret care as well, and a link to these may be found on the FERRET CENTRAL web site: . THE FERRET MAILING LIST (FML): The FML has 3,000+ ferret-loving subscribers and the topic is simply ferrets, ferrets, and more ferrets. Moderated by Mr. Bill Gruber, it's a great source of ferret entertainment and information. Visit FERRET CENTRAL on the web (see paragraph above) for more info on the FML. To subscribe to the FML, send email to its moderator, Bill Gruber, at and ask to be added. You can also try subscribing automatically by sending email to with the command SUBSCRIBE FERRET in the body of the email. 1. URGENT From: XVDeathKnightVX@aol.com Date sent: Thu, 24 Feb 2000 15:30:07 EST Bad news. Kato, my little buddy, died today, Thursday, Febuary 24th, 2000. He had severe cancer in him. I'm not sure where it was. I wanted to thank everyone who tried to help me with him. There's a lot more I have to say, but I am in disbelief right now, and I don't know what to do. Thanks again everyone. Should I let the vet take care of him, or should I pick him up? Love, Brian and Kato..... Kato October 1996 - Febuary 24th, 2000 2. Insulinoma Surgery Question Date sent: Thu, 24 Feb 2000 10:13:32 -0600 From: "Mary Rogers" Since I'm new to this insulinoma disease I would like to hear from those of you who have had the surgery for the insulinomas. My Fruity has insulinoma, but he's not a surgical candidate (age 6 and lots of other problems, but he keeps on, just amazes me). However, my Harley is a good candidate since he's 3-ish. The only signs she's showing so far is the hind leg weakness where he's walking along and then falls over (not all the time, thank goodness). When I saw him do it, it freaked me out big time! The glucose was 58 at the vets, but he sent it out to make sure. I don't want to just put him on pred. He's got too much life left in him, such a sweetie! He's my dark sable slinky. If you don't hold on to him he'll slip through your hands :o) In the mean time I've been making sure that he eats chicken gravy twice a day. After surgery do the insulinomas come back? Do you still have to put them on pred? Is the recuperation like any other surgery? Any info would be greatly appreciated. It's been a long while since I have posted anything but now's the time. Phoebe, my 3 1/2 yr old had her left adrenal gland removed last May. At the time the vet said that her right appeared normal however, she never had any hair regrowth. Since then her vet who did the surgery has moved to Arizona so I was in search of another experienced vet who I found with many letters of recommendations, Dr. Kemmerer at WestEnd Animal Hospital in Newberry (just outside of Gainseville, FL). I took Phoebe to her last Saturday for a consult and she told me what I suspected that undoubtably the right was involved. She showed classic signs of more hair loss, scratching and swollen vulva. She did a CBC and a Mini-Chemisty Panel and everything was normal. I did have an option to Lupron but since surgery was definately an option for Phoebe that is what Dr. Kemmerer's 1st choice was. SO she is scheduled tomorrow (Tuesday) for surgery. Dr. Kemmerer said she would have to stay 3- 4days and that she would take her home with her tomorrow night after surgery. I have read a lot of your postings and I think most of you feel go for it as soon as possible and not wait. I sure hope I am doing the right thing. I just don't want to lose her during surgery or post but hopefully will prolong her life for quite some time since at this point she doesn't seem to have any other problems. I'll keep you posted. Thanks for listening. Phoebe and Gail, Tampa FL ----------------------- End of FAIML #391 ------------------------
