Fleas The FERRET ADRENAL/INSULINOMA MAILING LIST (FAIML) is a group that's come together to share support and information about adrenal and insulinoma diseases. FAIML comes out in digest format three to six times per week, depending on the number of posts sent, and their surgency. FAIML information is the opinion, only, of subscribers, mostly ferret caretakers. It is not medical advice, comes with no guarantee of accuracy, and is not meant to replace the examination and medical oversight of a qualified veterinarian. If your ferret is sick or exhibiting signs of illness take your fur kid to the most ferret- experienced vet you can find! A ferret- experienced vet is one of the most important services you can provide to your ferret. TO POST: Write POST at the end of your subject heading (the more specific you can be in your subject heading, the better) and send to . URGENT POSTS: If you feel the message is urgent please mark it POST URGENT and I'll send it out to subscribers as soon as I can, then include the message in the next list. CALIFORNIA RESIDENTS: Please write POST ANONYMOUS after your subject heading if you don't want your address or last name published. SUBSCRIBE/UNSUBSCRIBE: Just use the one address for posts, subscription questions, requests, cancellations, comments, etc. The list is run by hand so just send me an email. ADRENAL/INSULINOMA WEBSITE: FAIML ARCHIVES/PHOTOS: Past FAIMLs are being archived, with a search feature, on Michael Janke's adrenal/insulinoma web site: . Michael is also kindly posting pictures of FAIML subscribers and the ferrets at this site in the FAIML Album. Check out his site for more info. PAM GREENE's FERRET FAQs: I suggest people read (and reread) Pamela Greene's Disease FAQ's on Insulin and Adrenal diseases, as they offer a good background. I forward them to all new subscribers, and will gladly send them upon request. I also send the "Disease Package", a file that tells how to get all six of Pamela Greene's FAQs on ferret diseases. Pam also has excellent FAQ's about general ferret care as well, and a link to these may be found on the FERRET CENTRAL web site: . THE FERRET MAILING LIST (FML): The FML has 3,000+ ferret-loving subscribers and the topic is simply ferrets, ferrets, and more ferrets. Moderated by Mr. Bill Gruber, it's a great source of ferret entertainment and information. Visit FERRET CENTRAL on the web (see paragraph above) for more info on the FML. To subscribe to the FML, send email to its moderator, Bill Gruber, at and ask to be added. You can also try subscribing automatically by sending email to with the command SUBSCRIBE FERRET in the body of the email. 1. Help, I think I need advice quickly--URGENT POST From: "Lora Smith" Date sent: Wed, 17 May 2000 00:36:49 -0500 Hi everyone, I am new to the list and I think I need some experienced advice quickly. My elderly parents have a female ferret--Toya-who is approx. 3 yrs old. She has surgery about a month ago for an adrenal tumor on one side. I cannot remember which, but it was not the harder side that they speak of. Her only symptoms were hair loss, and not as much as I have seen in many pictures and slight abdominal bloating. She pretty much acted fine. Now after surgery she does not seem to be eating. She was on the prednisone for 15 days and we have tried everything to get her to eat. It is hard since I am not there most of the time and have to go by what my dad tells me, but she was nippy at first after surgery(maybe prednisone??) She has lost considerable weight, she looked poor with no hair anyway, but really does now. She has lately been sleeping alot. She has not really eaten much, I tried duck soup all kinds of cat and ferret food to no avail. Yesterday the vet gave me some Science Diet a/d and I had to force feed it to her. Dad said he has seen her just a few times drinking out of her water bottle. And like Christines baby, she has a greenish loose stool. Her weight loss and lethargy scare me. My dad seems set that she will die soon. I cannot give up hope. I was hoping someone might have had similar experience or knowledge. My mom is talking of discussing putting her down, which I cannot condone yet. Her hair is starting to grow back by the way, so I feel the surgery was successful. He did say that it had grown around the artery, but got most of it. I do not feel like there are any vets with very much ferret exp. in my area. We did not have the tumor pathology done, so my dad feels she has cancer because of her loss of appetite. I cant see it happening that rapidly after surgery. The vet thinks she may need to go back on the predinisone for awhile, I cant see it helping if it didn't before??Thanks ahead of time for all your help and sorry for the long post:) Good luck to you all and kiss your babies for me:) Lora 2. Preferably the (DOCP) shot that's given monthly. Some people have e-mailed me about Dr. Ludlow in Riverdale but I had to cancel an appointment with them and gave them ample notice and they left a message on my machine stating they wanted to charge me for the visit. That kind of turned me off especially because when I made the appointment they never mentioned a cancellation fee. New Jersey isn't to far if anyone knows someone good out there, or White Plains..... I have been to the Animal Medical Center and have gone for broke there, it's $90.00 just to walk in the door. Please help I need someone fairly local Thanx, Christina & Bandit 5. Fleas From: "mary gelliarth" Date sent: Wed, 17 May 2000 04:26:26 -0700 (PDT) What advice do you have re: fleas on ferrets. I have used Advantage for kittens per one vet. It is very short acting approx 1-2 wks. OF course, prevention is the key but my kitties and dog bring them in. Any ideas for safe treatment.? Thank you Mary mlgofjupiter@yahoo.com ----------------------- End of FAIML #421 -------------------------
