It comes out in digest format three to six times per week, depending on the urgency and number of posts. It is the opinion, only, of subscribers, and is not intended as medical advice, comes with no guarantee of accuracy, and is not meant to replace the examination and medical oversight of a qualified veterinarian. If your ferret is exhibiting signs of illness please take him or her to the most ferret-experienced vet you can. A ferret-experienced vet is one of the most important services you can provide for your ferret. TO POST: Write POST at the end of your subject heading (the more specific you can be in your subject heading, the better) and send to . URGENT POSTS: If you feel the message is urgent please mark it POST URGENT and I'll send it out to subscribers as soon as I can, then include the message in the next list. CALIFORNIA RESIDENTS: Please write POST ANONYMOUS after your subject heading if you don't want your address or last name published. SUBSCRIBE/UNSUBSCRIBE: Just use the one address for posts, subscription questions, requests, cancellations, comments, etc. The list is run by hand so just send me an email. ADRENAL/INSULINOMA WEBSITE and FAIML ARCHIVES/PHOTOS: For more info, check out Michael Janke's adrenal/insulinoma web site: . Past FAIMLs are archived there, with a search feature, and there is a FAIML album featuring pictures of FAIML subscribers and their ferrets. FERRET CENTRAL WEBSITE and PAM GREENE's FERRET FAQs: Ferret Central Website is the grand intersection of ferret websites, at . You can also find the Ferret FAQs there, which include invaluable FAQs on insulinoma and adrenal diseases. I forward these two FAQs to all new subscribers, and will gladly send them upon request. I also send the "Disease Package", a file that tells how to get all six of Pamela Greene's FAQs on ferret diseases. Pam also has excellent FAQ's about general ferret care. FERRET MAILING LIST (FML): The FML has 3,000+ ferret-loving subscribers and the topic is simply ferrets, ferrets, and more ferrets. Moderated by Mr. Bill Gruber, it's a great source of ferret entertainment and information. Visit FERRET CENTRAL on the web (see paragraph above) for more info on the FML. To subscribe to the FML, send email to its moderator, Bill Gruber, at and ask to be added. I posted a message about an odd bald spot behind my ferret's ear a few days ago on the fml. Clint is a 3 1/2 year old neutered sable male and has been healthy and active since we adopted him and Arnold from a shelter in Plano, Tx in 1998. We noticed an bald spot behind his right ear last week, about dime sized. There were no scratches or irritation on the skin to suggest it being scraped off or something. Upon closer examination, I found his belly hair to be thinning quite a bit, although his tail looks normal. Actually he seemed fluffier this fall than usual. I have also noticed some straining when he urinates, but he still has a normal urine flow. He eats and plays like usual, maybe sleeps a little more, but he's always been a more laid-back ferret that will curl up and doze if there isn't anything interesting to do. I am going to make him an appt. with the vet, but she doesn't do adrenal surgeries if that is what he needs. Does anyone know of any good ferret vets in the Oklahoma City/central Oklahoma area that have quite a bit of experience with adrenal surgeries? Do any vets near central OK do the new cryosurgical technique and how successful is it/is it better than traditional surgery? I would also like to know what to expect for the cost and length of the surgery, typical recovery times and survival rates, and anything special I can do to make Clint's recovery quicker if he has to have surgery. I would appreciate any info, and you can email me directly since I don't always have time to check all the mailing lists. Thanks! Laura And Arnold, Clint and Sophie, too! Thanks to everyone for your tips and concern. Dovie Date sent: Fri, 17 Nov 2000 11:52:14 -0800 From: "FerretGirl" Subject: thank u Hi all, thank you for all the support with Zippy. I appreciate the e-cards and well wishes. Ferret people are a good breed :-) Hope all your fuzzies are happy and healthy! FG P.S. My sable girl Rosie is living single for the time being. If anyone in the Flint/Detroit area wants to get together for a ferret "play-date," please e-mail me. She is 2.5 yrs. old, VERY healthy and her vaccines are up to date. I know she's hurting and I think another ferret pal would cheer her up. I did speak with Dr. Smeak, a surgeon here at OSU I trust and he was a little shocked/dumbfounded that he couldn't think of one name at MSU to recommend for ferret adrenal/prostatic surgery. He simply didn't know of anyone there who did work on ferrets. He actually did recommend the best idea (if at all possible) would be to travel to someone experienced. Sorry I couldn't do more. Good Luck.
