It comes out in digest format three to six times per week, depending on the urgency and number of posts. It is the opinion, only, of subscribers, and is not intended as medical advice, comes with no guarantee of accuracy, and is not meant to replace the examination and medical oversight of a qualified veterinarian. If your ferret is exhibiting signs of illness please take him or her to the most ferret-experienced vet you can. A ferret-experienced vet is one of the most important services you can provide for your ferret. TO POST: Write POST at the end of your subject heading (the more specific you can be in your subject heading, the better) and send to . URGENT POSTS: If you feel the message is urgent please mark it POST URGENT and I'll send it out to subscribers as soon as I can, then include the message in the next list. CALIFORNIA RESIDENTS: Please write POST ANONYMOUS after your subject heading if you don't want your address or last name published. Past FAIMLs are archived there, with a search feature, and there is a FAIML album featuring pictures of FAIML subscribers and their ferrets. FERRET CENTRAL WEBSITE and PAM GREENE's FERRET FAQs: Ferret Central Website is the grand intersection of ferret websites, at . You can also find the Ferret FAQs there, which include invaluable FAQs on insulinoma and adrenal diseases. I forward these two FAQs to all new subscribers, and will gladly send them upon request. I also send the "Disease Package", a file that tells how to get all six of Pamela Greene's FAQs on ferret diseases. Pam also has excellent FAQ's about general ferret care. FERRET MAILING LIST (FML): The FML has 3,000+ ferret-loving subscribers and the topic is simply ferrets, ferrets, and more ferrets. I started her on oral antibiotics and she is starting to eat supplements (nutra cal) however she won't eat her hard food. I bought her some wet food and she won't eat that either. She is urintating and defecating normally (as far as I can tell). Any ideas. Stacy Date sent: Fri, 1 Dec 2000 23:27:22 EST From: StacyRayburnS@aol.com Subject: Ferret Rubbing Mouth on Things; Losing Weight (still not eating!) She really isn't any better. It seems all she will eat is Nutracal when I feed it to her. I made her some "Duck Soup" however she didn't eat that either. I will try the gerber turkey stuff and see if that helps. Thanks for the insight. Stacy MODERATOR'S NOTE: I'd written Stacy earlier with some suggestions about Gerber's baby food, and again tonight with some info on hand/force feeding Gerbers and also water, though I wish I'd gotten her first post out earlier! I think she'd appreciate further tips on hand feeding, possibly force feeding, food and water. I suggested a call very soon to her vet as well (and sent her Troy Lynn's address, my secret "ferret saint" weapon - Hi Troy Lynn!). Are there any other symptoms your ferret has, Stacy? If there are and you send a message I can send it out to the group when I get it. Ferrets are small mammals so don't do well without eating for very long, and they get dehydrated quickly as well. Also, if you need help finding a ferret-experienced vet send along your city and state. While many good and worthy vets see ferrets, it is harder to find one who has treated enough ferrets long enough to be really experienced and up-to-date across the board on their ailments. Hang in there and keep us posted! Lynn Date sent: Fri, 01 Dec 2000 18:19:35 -0800 From: "Christine Bertch" Subject: Colitis in insulinomic ferret Hello everyone, I was just wondering if anyone else whose ferrets are taking prednisone for insulinoma have developed colitis. I noticed Benji straining some during the past week and this morning he had a pinkish stool. After studying a fecal sample to rule out infections, my vet prescribed Metronidazole. Unfortunately, Benji absolutely will not tolerate it--not even mixed in food/ferretone, and gets so upset that I cannot continue it. I'm hoping there's a suitable alternative--anyone else with these problems? Thanks, Christine and Benji Date sent: Sun, 26 Nov 2000 23:28:28 -0600 From: "EMA2560" Subject: article by Susan Brown on Male Ferrets and Prostatic Disease (particularly as it relates to adrenal disease) Hi, Michelle, would you please also email me a copy of Dr. Susan Brown's article on Ferrets and Prostatic disease (particularly as it relates to adrenal disease)? I would not only like it for myself but also to share with my vet. Tinkerbell, had a good period with no vulva swelling and her hair all grew back. Now for about the last month, her vulva is again swollen and there is some thinning of her hair. I am watching her along with my vet closely. She will only be 2 this coming Jan. I am also still giving her only well water and not city water and adjusting the lights as has been suggested. I want to thank you all for information and support. I may not post often...but I read every post. Thanks also to Lynn for all her work in maintaining the list!!!! Best wishes to all the fuzzies and their people, (I hope this is an ok way to put it) EvaMarie and Tinkerbell Remembering Norm and Cinnaminon Date sent: Thu, 30 Nov 2000 16:17:32 -0800 (PST) From: "meesh meesh" Subject: meesh: Re: those interested in Dr. Brown's article Hi all :), I just wanted to let everyone who wanted a copy of the Susan Brown article to know that I haven't forgotten. I've just been having a terrible time scanning the darn thing at school. The assistant and I keep getting gobledy-gook and not readable text. He has given the article to the academic technology staff who said they'd figure out what is going on and scan it in for me in a number of formats. I hope to have it by tomorrow (cross your fingers). I'm also looking at having someone post it on their website since I have had an overwhelming response for copies and it *is* such a great article for vets *and* owners. I'll let you know how that goes. Just didn't want anyone to get concerned. And, if you are in a "crisis situation" and need it immediately to get to your vet, I'll fax it to you from kinko's ASAP. Just email me with a fax number - no problem at all.
