A short list today. I'm finally on the serious hunt for a computer, shopping locally before ending up (probably) buying a Gateway. I've been warned away from locally-assembled PC clones (possible incompatability problems down the road; though am checking one more place where an Intel motherboard - not just chip set - is available). I checked out a local used PC "Re-PC" store, where a Pentium 60 goes for $700 - 900, silly when a new, better if still on the old-fashioned end of technology computer could be had for $300 more. Upgrading my 486 (40 mg hard drive!!!!) is silly for same reason. Might as well buy a tad down from the newest machine so I don't have to buy a new computer in a couple years. Next I'll compare namebrand Pentium 233's to the Gateway 233 I'm considering... then decide. It would be nice to get a Web Page going, where people could browse the lists by subject, that kind of thing, and get better software to organize the lists. Anyway, that's what I've been up to, while Wally has been busy putting on a thick, shiney winter coat - yay! Still tolerating the Lysodren well, and has put on another ounce so he's up to his fall weight... a couple more ounces and he'll be at his winter weight! Weight Gain 1.---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Thu, 16 Oct 1997 01:39:36 -0700 From: Chris & Shelley Knudsen Subject: Large adrenal tumors Hello! This is my first time posting here, so I will quickly introduce myself to those of you who don't know me. My name is Shelley Knudsen, and I run the Legion of Superferrets of Nebraska Ferret Shelter. I started it about a year ago. I made it up till 3 months ago with no adrenals. I now have 4. Two are probably left sided, one is possibly right sided, and 1 is almost definitely both sided. My question is about the one who probably has the tumors on both sides. He was turned into the shelter about 3 weeks ago. His former owners said he lost all of his hair a little over a year ago, and then grew it all back, except for his tail and legs, so he has most likely had it for quite a while. The unusual thing is, he has a very distended abdomen. I have read that a distended abdomen can be a symptom of adrenal disease, but this thing is huge. It is also very hard. Is is possible that it could be a very large tumor or something else? I have been waiting for a vet 2 1/2 hours away to order a stapler (I think that is what she called it), and then she was going to do all 4 surgeries, and attempt any right sided tumors with the aid of the stapler for the vena cava. She is the most experienced vet that I can find within a 4 hour radius, and even she is not comfortable with right sided adrenals, but she is willing to try. My regular vet is going to come along and observe the surgeries. What are the chances that Jake's distended abdomen is a large tumor? Should I have her go ahead with the surgery, or just let him live out the rest of his life. He is very sweet, although not real energetic. He kind of wheezes, but otherwise seems to be fine. He is a determined kisser, and no where near anemic. I cannot afford to do an ultrasound, and most vets here in Nebraska would probably not be experienced enough to see anything definitive anyway. (Finding a good ferret vet here is very difficult. : ( ) Thank you for any help you can give me. Dooks and kisses to all the fuzzies, Shelley Knudsen Legion of Superferrets of Nebraska ferrets@tcgcs.com 402-463-0190 2.---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Thu, 16 Oct 1997 06:52:34 -0600 From: David L Adams Subject: Noni I will first state that no one of the now 19 is in a critical condition. I would like to say at this moment I have 4 with appearent adrenal problems with three having had prior surgery at least once. I was hoping that the Noni was going to be the manna from God but after about a month(little longer) no amazing happenings. Some more hair loss in one but no change in any other. All four are on Timmy's tea and it seems to do a good job of keeping up there health but no change in adrenal symptoms. The Noni does taste good and if not so expensive would make a wonderful drink. I personally cannot say it did any of the things I wanted it to do. As a note if anyone needs a piece of small teflon tubing- small enough to use as a catheter for a ferret- let me know as I have a small supply which I got from Cole-Palmer years ago. It saved Bobo's life. To the subject of keeping fuzzlessbutts warm in winter has anyone had any luck with small dog sweaters and such. Our Bumpkins is bald from the neck down and we have had no luck in keeping anything on him for more than a minute or two-- just long enough for him to get out. It seems he would be cold but it does not deter him in his pursuit of little girl ferrets. When he sleeps he usually curls up in a blanket but sometimes i find him in his hammock bare skin to the cool. House is heated but usually to just above 70--don't tell EPA. Also, keeps me from worrying, say when a galoot like Petey puts on his annual weight gain of one pound in the course of only one month (!!), and sheds it in the spring just as quickly! Hi Lynn, First off Lynn your list is so pleasant I really enjoy reading the posts, everyone is so kind, caring & funny.. Sometimes I feel like I am floundering when it comes to my fur kids because I want so much to do what is right for them, then I read a list like yours and I always feel better. There always seems to be a topic which is close to some questions or concerns I have or have thought about asking myself. Please keep up the wonderful work you do. Thanks for the information regarding lava beds, I will contact Margaret Ann & Scott it sounds like you had a wonderful evening. Lynn your story about Petey put my mind at ease, I have a cute story for you regarding weight. Rupert, Fiona share a large cage two story job, in the cages previous life it was for show cats and had three seperate levels well I drilled holes between the levels and put a ramp. So the kids litter pans are on the third level, their bedroom on the 2nd level and the lower level has their food, water and a couple more litter boxes. Rupert and Fiona have lived in this cage for over one year. A week ago I came home and Rupert was lying on the lower floor with no blankets just food, water and litter. He had pulled a blanket from the second level and jammed the hole. (Bad situation Fiona has insulinoma and needs to have access to her food and she was blocked on the upper level). I was so upset, the poor little guy laying there rolled up in a little ball with no blankey. So the next morning I put them back in the cage before going to work, just before I left the house I peeked into the cage and poor Rupert was laying on the lower level with no blankets again, so I left the door open so he could have run of the house and find a comfortable place to sleep for the day. I found this very strange, so I posted to the FML and Gary Holowicki responded and put my mind at ease. So that weekend I decided to try and figure out why Rupert wouldn't go to the upper level. I opened the upper level door put him in he did not act like it was tramatic just sort of cruised around and then decided to go down the ramp guess what? he got stuck he has gained so much weight in last couple of weeks he does not fit through the exit hole. I was so happy and so relieved that his weight was the problem and wasn't because he didn't like Fiona anymore or whatever ferrets think. I didn't know what to think. See how well these lists work, Lynn you mention Petey gained one lb in a month so Ruperts weight gain I am sure is normal, but I wouldn't have known that unless you posted about Petey and the post really wasn't about Petey it was about scales, these lists just work great. Let me ask the question anyway do alot of ferrets gain weight that quickly and that amount during the change in weather? Got to get back to work, thanks again.
