It's been a whole week. Postings have been slow (though great), so have held off. Dr. Purcell, thank you so much for posting the reference on Dr. Weiss' article. My vet very much enjoyed speaking with Dr. Weiss about my adrenal Wally, so would probably love to read his article. Also, can't wait for Modern Ferret and your article! Would love to get the exact reference on the pred. info - Hillyer and Quesenberry. I'm very interested to hear more about be-adrenalectomy fuzzies being treated with prednisone two to four weeks and weaned off - with some pred. given down the line as needed. Wally (inoperable right adrenal tumor; still has left adrenal) is still doing great on Lysodren, but occasionally has hind-end weakness and vomiting. One pred. pill (and some time of the Lysodren) clears this right up. It's amazing how quickly the prednisone works. It's nice to see him with a completely full and normal coat, especially as I understand that many adrenal fuzzies get partial or dense coats - the importance being that they're recovering from the disease of course! Sterling, it's nice to hear from you again. Write me if you'd like me to send some past lists dealing with bi-adrenalectomies, unless you've saved them yourself. Diana, I'm glad to hear that Molly is doing well on Lysodren! And... welcome to new members! Lynn Mc. Adrenal List #56, dated November 10, 1997 1. My Molly hasd been on Lysodren and preds since August 30 and after fiddling around with the suspension to find one more palatable for her we are seeing some wonderful results. Molly now has hair covering a little more than half her body. I am curious te see how her weight is doing. She weighed 1.2 pounds just before starting her meds. She is a very petite little lady. Her energy is about what it was although we never saw a dramatic loss of energy. We just had a bald ferret jumping, leaping, hisssing and dooking!!! My prayers will continue for all the other adrenal babies and their families. The info on pred use was in Hillyer and Quesenberry if I remember right. I have a stack of references as work, I'll make sure of the exact one and let you know. -Dr. Karen drkaren@world.std.com 3.---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Fri, 7 Nov 1997 20:59:00 +0000 From: "Karen Purcell, DVM" Subject: Re: pred post op (please post) Check out the article by Dr. Weiss in Veterinary Medicine, the Sept. 1997 issue. It is a very good review of adrenelectomy. It also gives a good usage of prednisone if needed after surgery. I found this article after I wrote mine. -Dr. Karen drkaren@world.std.com 4.---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Sun, 9 Nov 1997 11:53:19 -0600 From: Sterling Killian Subject: Greetings (Vet Question re: bi-adrenalectomies) Greetings all.......I am back.....well I never left actually I continue to read this list and answer the questions I that I can.... Some of the newer members may not remember me but I was here to receive the first adrenal list and since then I lost my baby Lydia to adrenal disease and now I have a new case looming on the horizon. The other day I adopted three ferrets that had spent a long time in a shelter before they came to live with the woman from whom I adopted them. She was moving to California and so had to find a new home for her fuzzsbutts. They have settled right in with my bunch and we are now a seven weezil household. I have a very weezily basement.......But I digress... Point being one of my new babies has adrenal disease. She was born the same month and year as Lydia at marshall farms and she is about five now. Her name is Gumby...Gumby is a sweet little bit of nothing. She is so tiny and fragile.... She had adrenal surgery two years ago but is now experiencing some of the tell tale signs of hairloss and a swollen vulva...I am familiar with bilateral adrenal disease and I was wondering if any of our consulting vets or any of you were familiar.....with going for a second surgery....to remove the other adrenal gland or at least debulk it? Let me know about your experiences. Sorry folks, the article reference (Vet Med) was incorrect. Dr Weiss' article was in The Journal of the American Animal Hospital Association Nov/Dec 1997 Vol 33 No. 6. I obviously was using the wrong brain that night. -Dr. Karen drkaren@world.std.com --------------------------End of Adrenal List #56------------------------
