Well, we have a very sick fuzzy out there tonight - Sheba. Please write and help Sandra and Sheba out. I've written a note, but I haven't had an insulinomic fuzzy and know little. Someone might forward Pam G.'s Insulinoma FAQ if they have a current issue on hand. I'll head over to the ferret news group next and see if it's posted there. Fiona needs help too, and Jill's intro - Fiona is sleeping her life away, went right to my heart. Jill is in California and feeling very isolated right now. Her vet follows Susan Brown's protocols and ideas, but Jill is worried that other options/ideas aren't being willingly looked at (she wrote this to me). It must be so hard to be a fuzzy lover in California :(... If appropriate, don't forget to cc the list, so we can all learn. :) Trish Curtis, director of Ferrets First Rescue and Shelter, asked me to mention that her vet, Dr. Roger Kendrick, has joined the list. She praises him for being a wonderful help to her shelter fuzzies (especially in skills of ultrasound diagnostics)... so, welcome Dr. Kendrick! May Sandra and Sheba have a very blessed Thanksgiving, and the rest of us fuzzy lovers, too. I'll be taking my kids out for a romp in the backyard as a way of thanking them for all their love and sweet spirits. They'll all get turkey soup. I think I'll also take some moments to just be thankful for you all, and for the good vets that have helped us, and for just having experienced life this far, goods, bads, evils, loves, and FERRETS!!! Thank you Gadzook Kramer and Wally Fleaful Red Rodeo Emerson (the LeMarches); Claudette Ladybird Piranhette and Minnie (Miniature) Markhum (the Poufays); Tarzan Rapscalian Ramakrishnaiah Stallione (Gahuna Kahuna); Sneaky Pete (Tippy Toe) and Minces Lucille (Lucy Krakatina) (the Labodas)... and Mr. Sir Duke Winthropt Waverly Wellington, III (the big ole cat)! And, to those shimmering among the stars: thank you Schroedee Boat and Percy Fergus (the Fergusons), and little Squeek and your neural tube babies, who taught me so much about life, letting go, nurturing, and... love Prayers for our sick fuzzies and thanks for those in health, Lynn Mc. P.S. And thanks for answering the adrenal survey :) ... more on that later... Adrenal List #58, dated November 26, 1997 1. Sheba very sick - insulinoma? 2. Another adrenal fuzzy? (Please Post) 3. Our little Sheba is so very sick. Our vet feels sure she has insulinoma and we are heart sick. She is skinand bone, so weak she staggers. Her three buddies have not caught this and it has been going on for three weeks now so I am sure that it is something systemic. Please send us any information as how to proceed. She is so fisty and such a fighter that it just kills us to see her this way. Thank you a million times over. We are feeding her duck soup which she likes and pedialyte. (Please Post) Hello all, I have 11 furballs, 3 of whom I am treating successfully with a natural adrenal treatment. I figure 3 out of 11 ain't bad with a problem as common as adrenal tumors. Well last night I may have discovered number 4. Spike, my not yet 1 1/2 year old MF male, a big hulk of a ferret with a heart of gold was trying to mate little Sassy (MF female of same age). He had a hold of her ear and he was straddling her back and. . .well, you can guess the rest. I am so upset. He's my little sweetheart. Much too young to be showing adrenal symptoms. We do have one case at the South Florida Shelter where I help out, of a MF male starting to mate with his blanket when he was 1 1/2 and now at 2 1/2-3, he's having problem after problem with blockages, as well as the typical hair loss. I'm really worried for my Spike. I guess what I'm here for is to ask if there's a possibility of any other explanation. I've heard of partial neuterings, one testicle being left. I see no signs of this I'm just wishful thinking. I've also noticed lately that he's stopped giving me kisses. He used to do it without fail. Now he has no interest in me whatsoever. I guess I don't measure up to Sassy :-) Thanks for listening. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks, Jilted in Florida 3.---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Fri, 21 Nov 1997 10:04:45 -0500 From: "Michael F. It seems they have a tendency to do this (remission) at the end of what would normally be their breeding season. So here it is November, maybe a month or so past the end of the normal breeding season. I hope for Tiki's sake that it was a misdiagnosis. You'll find out if she starts loosing her hair again. Hi Lynn - Thank you for adding me to the Adrenal List. I received my first one this morning and am sure I will be learning a great deal. I already have one question - what is a "biofile"? Thanks, Diane NOTE FROM MODERATOR: Hi Diane. The Biofile list contains short histories as introductions to our list fuzzies, but the updates (follow-up posts) are contained in the lists, so the biofiles haven't functioned as I originally envisioned, as case studies. With a list search engine, one could cull case studies from the lists by searching by fuzzy name. I always try to get the names of fuzzies in the subject line. I think it's time to change the introduction to the list I send out, doing away with the Biofile mention. It's just to dang hard to remember to update and becomes duplicative of posts. Clear as mud? Does anyone object to abandoning the Biofile idea? (I'll keep the Biofile list it in archives, of course). Let me know if you do or if you have any other ideas for tracking individual cases. I'll be happy to send the Biofile out to anyone who would like to take a look at it for the first time or again. Thanks! She is on .4 (point 4 cc's) of predisone twice a day (she has not had surgery she is almost 8 y/o) vet did not recommend surgery. But recently she only sleeps, she will wake up for duck soup and medication and goes right back to sleep. To my knowledge she doesn't get up unless I wake her up and I don't know what to do for her. Does anyone wean their ferrets off of the predisone? Her vet increased her dose from .2 (point two) to the .4 about two months ago. I am wondering if its to much pred or what? I'm sorry, but it's me again, with a request this time. Please send me the update copy of Timmy's Recipe, by Gary Holowicki. You mentioned (in List #6 I believe) that you have it in the archives, available on request. Thanks, Diane P.S. Do you know anything about this...I think I read somewhere (FML maybe?) that Timmy's recipe is available now for purchase, all ready bottled up. Do you know anything about this? MODERATOR'S NOTE: Hi there Diane. Gary Holowicki can send you the most current Timmy's recipe (hi Gary!). He's on this list and address is listed in "To" line. I haven't heard that Timmy's recipe is bottled up and ready to send, though. Gary? :) 7.---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Sat, 22 Nov 1997 00:02:58 -0500 From: Melanie Hough Subject: Insulinoma fuzzy doing better I am new tothe adrenal list and was referred here by someone on the FML. I have a 3 1/2-4 year old boy who was recently diagnosed with insulinoma. His glucose was 20 at the time of diagnosis and the vet said that with a glucose this low he was not a good candidate for surgery. He also said that his glucose would probably never be near normal. I made up a duck soup recipe based on ome I got on the internet (I added some herbs)and started giving it to him twice a day with his pred (.1cc 2 times a day). Cassidy had his glucose checked last weekend and it was 82! I almost did backflips in the vet's office! He will probably have surgery when I go home for Christmas break (I am a grad student). Does anyone have any advice for me? I would like to hear from some people who have been through this to find out how the recovery went, how long the ferret lived , etc. Thanks, Melanie 8.---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Sat, 22 Nov 1997 22:45:45 -0600 From: Jason & Alison Overstreet Subject: Post to Adrenal List: Overdue Update on Oliver Hi, all! Just wanted to let everyone know that we are all doing fine here. We posted a while back about Oliver, our 1 1/2 yr. old fert, who was very thin and losing hair on his tail. Well, Jason and I decided to wait it out for a little while (as most of you suggested) and as it turns out he is doing soooo much better! He's quite a bit plumper and has _beautiful and full_ hair all over, including his tail! =) We had done quite a few tests on him, and in the end opted to forego the exploratory to see what happened. We are so glad that we did! We continue to keep everyone in our thoughts and hope for happy and healthy fuzzies! He is doing fine in that area. When he was young he had bladder stones which were like crystals. He was put on Hill's S/D (I believe) to break them down and then C/D to prevent them. I have fed him Neura Special Diet which is the natural equivalent of C/D since then and have recently put him on Totally Ferret for Older Ferrets. The Totally Ferret is supposed to prevent stones. I have noticed recently that sometimes he strains to pee. He is able to eliminate, but sometimes it seems to be more of an effort than it should be. Could stones be forming again even though he has been on diets to prevent them, and should I change his diet again, perhaps putting him back on the diet that breaks them down temporarily? Thanks. Hi Lynn, I think you're doing a wonderful job with the Adrenal List. I was wondering too, if you could give me the info on how to subscribe to the Insulinoma list? I have a little boy who had left adrenal surgery in May, now has a right adrenal tumor at the edge of the vena cava, numerous tumors in the spleen and liver, in addition to multi "different" tumors throughout his tiny body. Vet has opted for no surgery, but depending on what type of tumors the blood work shows, will determine type of meds to put him on. Vet suspects insulinoma tumors. I know a little about adrenal but absolutely nothing of insulinoma. Should get a call from the vet today after blood work is returned, telling me the type of meds he'll be on. Without meds my little boy has 3-4 months, with meds possibly a year. I have Timmy's recipe and will start collecting ingredients and try him on this. Anything to buy us more happy, pain free time together. Thanks again for the hopefully forthcoming info. Have a very Happy Thanksgiving. Sandi MODERATOR'S NOTE: Hi Sandi. This is the adrenal and insulinoma list, so you're here! Welcome. -----------------End of Adrenal List #58---------------
