If things work out, we'll be on Juno for awhile, until I get up and running on my new Internet Service Provider (U.S. West). Please let me know if you get something really weird in your mailbox; possitive feedback would be appreciated too! I have no idea if you'll get all the addresses in the header using Juno as server - as usual I'm flying by the seat of my pants :) So, please someone let me know how this mailing turns out! Once I get the new ISP (about a week to get the software in the mail, though of course they've already billed my credit card, I'll need to reset up the list and mailing addresses. Could take a month. So, please bear with me! In the meantime I'll be hunting down good list software! All your addresses are in two lists - we're up to 87 members now! Once I get going on a permanent ISP/good software... I can look at starting up a website... but one step at a time! Anyway, Wally is all better!!!! (regarding message #2). It probably was heliobacter that was released into his system when he was palpated (so vet Cathy thinks he may have ulcers). More on that when I get time, but amoxicillin magic set in within hours of him getting a dose, and he is fully recovered! Fuzzy hugs and a Happy New Year!!!! P.S. This new computer is like a dream come true... it's great!!!! L. FAIML #63, dated December 30, 1997 AGAIN: !!!!PLEASE NOTE: Please use the FAIML@juno.com address for me until I have my new one!!!! 1. It's so. so nice to have you on the list and responding to questions and sharing your experiences as a vet! I just logged on to check messages after a day of worry over Wally, and it was warming and comforting to come across your message. Just five minutes ago I saw a sign that tells me Wally's maybe going to be okay! He got his second shot of Lupron (the first dose three weeks ago was maybe too small to have an impact) on Saturday, and beginning Monday has been one very sick fuzzy... He's been doing great on Lysodren, but Cathy Johnson-Delaney, DVM, thought he should have Lupron, too (Lysodren for killing off the adrenal tissue, and Lupron for interrupting the pituatary/hypothalamic feedback loop). He hasn't eaten or drunk anything on his own since the shot (maybe something soon after the shot on Sunday, but starting Monday, nothing). We've got him on sub-q fluids (a godsend of a technique to learn for fuzzy parents!) and handfed turkey baby food. Cathy came down with a bug today/yesterday, so maybe the Lupron has caused depression coupled with a bug from Cathy. Cathy thinks she may have palpated him a bit too hard (the tumor has shrunk! and she was looking for it), and irritated ulcers (though I'm not aware he has them) or heliobacter bacteria... my big concern today was his shallow, rapid breathing coupled with a distended abdomen... was thinking kidney failure, but he's been urinating regularly. He vomited at first (after the shot), and has had on/off again diarrhea. Very lethargic. Temp is 103. Difficulty walking, unless I hold his tummy and then he jets along toward his hidey corner. Doesn't want to drink water from a syringe, in fact he takes the dropper in his mouth and moves it away from the area! But, he's eating like a little horse. I bring him out for handfeeding, but turkey baby food in front of him, and he eats and eats... bizarre. After a call to Cathy, he's been put on amoxicillin today and tonight I put him to bed with his small, rubber beach ball.. and he emphatically placed it outside his bed... twice! And, he climbed right up onto the lava bed (he has a choice to sleep on or off it, and has pretty much ignored it, but this was deliberate).... Anyway, didn't mean to go into so much detail, but it felt good! Have a wonderful week off, Dr. Karen! I, too, should be off elsewhere, in Portland, Ore., having a rare Christmas with my dad (who is usually in New Mexico at this time, but is at my sisters undergoing chemo and radiation, routine follow-up to cancer surgery; doing great), but I haven't been able to leave Wally... have high hopes for leaving tomorrow though! Fuzzy hugs to you... and season's of "non-stress" greetings, too! Lynn On Tue, 23 Dec 1997, Karen Purcell, DVM wrote: > Lynn, > I'm on vacation for this week. I whipping cream okay for insulinomic ferrets Hello, I have a couple of questions. The first is...what is diaxodide? The second is some of you use heavy whipping cream for your ferrets--is this ok? Everyone I've talked to and everything I've read says no milk products for ferrets! I've learned quite a bit from this list and to those of you who have emailed me privately--thanks bushels. Keep up the great work on behalf of adrenal and insulinoma ferrets! Happy holidays to all! Has anyone else had this experience? Did you try surgery again later? Was it successful. I am very hesitant to put him through another surgery but I am curious about the results that others have had in this type of situation. Thanks, Melanie 5.---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Sat, 27 Dec 1997 19:08:48 -0500 From: Dave and Pam Taynor Subject: Insulinoma - Rikki Hi, just an update on how Rikki, my insulinomic ferret has been doing. Since he was diagnosed in Sept things have gone up and down and up. At first we made sure he ate frequently and he seemed fine, but was sleeping more. By late October though he started haveing problems in the mornings. He would be weak, not want to wake up, and a couple of times even needed Karo syrup to stop his drooling and back end weakness. We then took a trip to the heatlth store for some help. We have started with Brewers Yeast and a Papaya extract. Within a couple of days of taking a small bowl of Totally Ferret, wetting it and letting it soften, then mixing in 1/2 tablespoon of Yeast and 2 capsules of extract, then dividing it up into thirds(giving a third of it three times a day), Rikki was a changed ferret. He has had no more symptoms, he has more energy, and is not sleeping as much, and is acting like his old self again. Eventually we may try the surgery route, but since he was declared tumor free just last May(during adrenal surgery), I won't put him through it again too soon. Prednisone may be in his future too, but as long as help from nature keeps his life quality high, I won't resort to medication. I want to thank everyone who has given me information on nutritional supplements. We will gradually be adding more to his diet. The FAIML has been a sanity saver to me and a life saver for Rikki.
